Have you been getting an overwhelming amount of spam comments appearing in the Comments sections of your Instagram posts? At one point, I was spending the first few minutes every time I entered the Instagram app just deleting these spam comments from fake Instagram users.
Enter the retailer debate: Are spam comments harmful to your page or potentially helping engagement on your posts (even though they’re fake comments)?
To clear up any misinformation, we believe spam comments are harmful to any Instagram account, as the algorithm may recognize your post as “spammy” and avoid showing it to real viewers on the platforms.
In addition, who wants a real viewer to see a collection of spam comments on your posts; potentially deterring them from leaving a real and honest comment? It’s best to delete the comments and block the commenters. This may be a tedious task, but it’s worth it.
Even better, avoiding the Instagram spam comments altogether would be the most convenient solution to this annoying problem.
To be proactive with this issue, don’t allow these comments on your page from the get-go. You can do this by using Hidden Words on Instagram. Here’s how to enable it.
On your Instagram profile, select the menu with the 3 lines on the top right, then follow these steps.
- Select “Settings”.
- Select “Privacy”.
- Select “Hidden Words”.
- Scroll down and select “Manage list”.
- Type in several words and phrases that you often find appearing in your spam-like comments, then press “Add” after each word or phrase.
Some phrases you might include in Hidden Words could be:
- Promote it on
- DM us at
- Send pic
In our eyes, deleting and blocking Instagram spam comments is a waste of precious time. Enable the Hidden Words feature to give yourself more time to focus on creating awesome content and using new features!
What I Want You To Take Away From This Blog:
- Take the time to delete and block spam comments.
- Be proactive by blocking common phrases with the Hidden Words feature.
- Save time by using the tools available to you!
Okay, over to you…
Did you know this feature existed? If not, leave a real, human comment over on our Instagram page! We love building an authentic community and connecting with real people.
It doesn’t exist. Or at least not anymore.
Hey there, Julien! I just checked the Crystal Media business account and my personal account and Hidden Words was available on both! I would suggest to update your IG app in the app store and see if this feature is available to you after that. Be sure to go to Settings and then Privacy to find the Hidden Words feature.
I’ve been using this strategy for a while but it no longer works. Even though I have “promote” as a hidden word, bots are able to comment with that word once again.
I think it’s possible they are getting around the restriction by using custom fonts when they post.
Yes, we have noticed this too, and of course it’s extremely frustrating. We have reported the comments as spam, and I suggest you do the same. The spammers have currently figured out a way to temporarily get around this, but as this is super annoying for IG users, it’s likely Meta will be quick to try to fix this! Be sure to update your app whenever there is an update available to get the latest version including all the fixes to glitches and bugs. To check, you can go to the App store on your phone and search “Instagram” and then press “Update” if the button says that. If it says “Open”, you currently have the latest version!
