Tis’ the Season for Holiday Marketing: Easy Social Media Tips for Retailers

It’s a busy time of the year for most retailers, so I wanted to provide some ideas of what to post on your online networks to increase engagement, foot traffic and sales this season. If you have any additional ideas or campaigns that worked well for you, please share them on our Facebook page.
Let the brainstorming begin!

  • Change your Facebook Cover Image to represent the season. Use holiday colors and symbols with pictures of the perfect gift that customers can buy at your store. You can use picmonkey.com to easily create a collage of product/holiday pictures. If you can, I’d suggest changing this each week, featuring new products. Remember, Cover Images need to be 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall. Here’s a cheat sheet .
  • Post about common holiday issues like gift-giving, shopping on a budget, traveling, etc. These posts will spark conversations and are relatable to your online communities. It’s important to add value to your networks and not just push products and offers.
  • Create a ‘Holiday Solution Center’ Pinterest board with Pins of products that make perfect presents for moms, dads, friends, sisters, grandmas, co-workers, etc. Make sure you optimize descriptions with keywords and hashtags!
  • Engage with Facebook Fans by asking holiday related questions such as what they love or hate about the holiday season, favorite drink, favorite dish, holiday rituals, etc.
  • Give gift certificates or special offers to Fans who upload a picture of themselves shopping in your store.
  • Tell shoppers to add items to their Pinterest account on a “Wish List” or “Gift Ideas” board and send the link to their families/friends. They can easily do this if they have a Smartphone using the Pinterest application.
  • Give check-in offers through Facebook or Foursquare like “Check-in to our store on Facebook to receive a free scarf valued at $29.”
  • Host a 12 Days of Christmas event on your Facebook or Twitter account, offering different discounts each day leading up to Christmas. I LUV Southwest Airlines’ Twitter campaign that asked followers to tweet a different Southwest-themed photo every day and gave away a $1,000 gift card for the best photo.
  • Post time sensitive holiday specials like “Today Only! Come in before 6pm and receive 20% of your purchase!” or “Come in today to get free gift wrapping – only available today!”
  • Host an ‘Ugly Sweater Contest’ either on your Facebook page or in-store and promote through online networks.
