In Crystal Media’s Insider Facebook group, we scour the retailer questions for the most talked-about topics to share the answers that we know all store owners can benefit from.
Here’s a question from last month that retailers were buzzing about:
Retailer Question:
How many people should we follow as businesses? Is it better to have more followers or to curate our followers? Does this even matter?
Crystal Media’s Answer:
There is no set number of people to follow, but I do like to recommend that you should be following the same amount of people that are following you (or around that number, give or take a hundred or so)! The reason for this is because as a business page, you should be engaging with the accounts you follow since social media is a two-way street!
It’s recommended to take a couple minutes a day to like and comment on the posts in your feed, and watch and react to Stories from your business account. Ideally, the accounts you’re engaging with are customers and potential customers of your store! You’re fostering a relationship with them and pouring into their lives as well.
The more accounts you follow, the more saturated your page will be with people who aren’t following you/shopping with you, so the precious engagement time may be used on accounts who likely aren’t going to engage back with you. My first couple months at Crystal Media, I spent about 15 minutes or so a day going through our “Least Interacted With” accounts (found under who you’re following on Instagram), and I’d check to see if they’re following us. If not, I would like their most recent photo, then unfollow them. If they followed us after liking their picture, they‘d get a follow again. If not, that follow belongs to our community who is a part of our PCGs!
