Insider Q: How do I turn off Stars on Facebook?

In Crystal Media’s Insider Facebook group, we scour the retailer questions for the most talked-about topics to share the answers that we know all store owners can benefit from.

Here’s a question from last month that retailers were buzzing about:

Retailer Question:

The Facebook Levels recently popped up on my Dashboard, and I am now stuck at the ‘Add Stars’ step. I don’t particularly think that asking customers for money whilst watching our stuff is a good look, but I am also concerned that Meta will penalize the page for not proceeding with the Levels/Stars (I am seeing a decrease in reach since I started ignoring the levels).

I couldn’t find a lot of information about the Levels online, so my questions are:

  1. Did anyone ever figure out how to successfully turn off and keep off stars?
  2. Do we have any idea how important Meta considers the Levels program to be?

Crystal Media’s Answer:

Hey there! Facebook Levels are practically making sure your profile is complete and active, and also prepped to be monetized (through Stars). I don’t believe it should be affecting your reach or performance if you don’t choose to go through with each of their recommendations. The image says that “Completion is optimal” so I don’t believe it will penalize you for not setting up Stars.

Although we know that apps really try to push their latest features and might better incentivize posts that use their new features (such as Stars), generally Stars hasn’t been received well by the Facebook community, so a lot of people are likely in the same boat as you!

Follow these steps to turn off Stars:

1). Go to https://business.facebook.com/latest/.
2). Select “Monetization” found on the left editing menu.
3). Click Stars.
4). Click “Settings” on the top 3 options on the Stars page.
5). Click the toggle to OFF for the “Turn on Stars” setting at the very top of the Settings page! (Please see attached for reference.)

I don’t have the option to turn stars off like you’ve shown here – I never turned them on in the first place ! How do I turn them of?

If you have a business page you should be able to follow the steps shown in this blog! I just followed them again to make sure they are still accurate and I was able to toggle the stars “on” and “off” from the Stars “Setting” page under Monetization on the left menu!

If you cannot find this option, then you may have to reach out to Facebook directly to ask them how to turn off Stars for you page, OR you can report this as a problem by following these steps:

Step 1: Click on your profile image on the top right of your page.
Step 2: Select “Help & Support”
Step 3: Select “Report a Problem”
Step 4: Select “Something went wrong” and choose the option to include a report for further detail for FB.
Then follow the prompts on the next screen, and include a screenshot of the issue in this area!
