Ann is looking for a birthday gift for her daughter.
She knows the brand that she is looking for, so she pulls out her phone and searches for the brand + her city. She’s running errands later and is happy to find that there is a store on her way that carries the brand she’s looking for. She opens her phone’s navigation and heads out.
Despite getting lost on the way there, Ann makes it to her destination… to find an empty storefront. She walks into a convenience store next door to ask if the store went out of business, but finds out that they have a new location fifteen miles away. Ann has so much to get done today, she decides that she can’t go out of her way to buy the gift. She spots a gift card to her daughter’s favorite chain store in the convenience store and decides to buy that instead.
How many times have you heard people say, “I just shop at chain stores because they are more convenient”? And this isn’t incorrect! Chain stores typically have more locations and more everyday essentials, helping you check more items off of your to-do list at once. Of course, there is a down side to convenience. Chain stores lack personal connection, unique and one-of-a-kind items, and detract from the local economy.
It’s no wonder that that Shop Small movement has caught on so wildly. But as an independent retailer, it’s your job to make shopping convenient for your customers, as well. The first, and most important way that you can do this is by making sure that your online listings have the correct information that your customer needs to get to your store. As the first items that pop up in search engine results, these listings can make or break a sale.
Curious as to whether your address is listed correctly on major listing sites? Unsure if customers are able to see your store hours? Wondering if you’re even LISTED anywhere? You can scan your business now to see how you’re showing up on the web.
