Buh Bye Facebook Fan Gates

Hello from Toronto!

This is my first time in Canada and I’ve had a great trip connecting with gift store owners at the Toronto Gift Show.

Because I’ve been traveling so much, I pulled together a quick video about an update to Facebook’s policy regarding fan gates.

If you are running a contest or are giving a special offer and people can only see the offer/enter to win after they like you, then you’re using a fan gate (also called a like gate) and you’re incentivizing people to like you on Facebook.

On November 5th all fan gates will be banned. Facebook stated:

“To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives.”

If you have any questions feel free to leave them in a comment on this post.

If you found this tip helpful please share it with a retailer friend.

The end of this month I’m announcing something exciting so if you haven’t joined my newsletter list, be sure to do so because you won’t want to miss this news! Join here.

Are there any other fan gating rules for other social media sites?

Hi Hailey! There isn’t a way to fan gate on other sites because when you follow someone on those sites, you still see the same content that you saw before, it’s all public (unless the brand’s account is set to Private, which I don’t suggest doing for a business). Great question!
