Retailers have been finding great success with the app that’s known to help users go viral if they put in the work! You know the one… TikTok!
With over 1 billion active users on the app, businesses can no longer use the excuse that their Perfect Customer Group doesn’t exist on this platform. People of all walks of life are spending time viewing short-form video content on TikTok. Although you might not see them making videos, rest assured that your PCGs are likely quietly enjoying the content.
TikTok trends in 2022 come and go. In fact, many have already lost momentum before you’re even aware that the trend existed. Fret not, because your social media best friend is here to let you in on evergreen trends that are here to stay… and that also happen to be perfect for retailers.
This trend is on-going because, lucky for us, pop-culture is always changing. There’s always a new celebrity reaction, movie scene, Starbucks drink, or meme to reference in a video.
CM team member Maddie Goode always reminds me that using pop culture WORKS in advertising—and the same thing rings true for TikTok. An example we use is how pumpkin spice lattes have their moment for a solid month in autumn. Hence, retailers can prepare to lean on this pop-culture reference with their products. If you’re a boutique owner, consider styling some clothes to look like the outfit version of a pumpkin spice latte. (Think brown wool trousers, a soft, tucked-in orange tee-shirt, and an oversized knitted cardigan.) This would make a great TikTok styling video referencing the popular drink.
Reference this TikTok trend throughout each season of 2022 by styling a beachwear outfit that mimics margaritas during the summer or peppermint lattes in the winter. Throw in some content referencing a nostalgic TV show (like Friends), or a trending celebrity moment (like MGK proposing to Megan Fox), and you’ve got yourself a solid pop culture TikTok strategy.
Transitions may be intimidating, but they’re worth it! A transition is when one video seamlessly transforms into another video by clipping together 2 or more videos. You’ll often see this with outfit changes, makeup tutorials, or packing orders from empty to full.
Transitions are great because they usually show a very clear and eye-catching before and after.
In this small business transition video, the owner throws a business card at an empty box. When it lands, the box has magically been packed!
I’ve saved the best for last. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… People want to buy from people! The unique thing about each business is YOU and your wonderful team. Content featuring people showing their faces has proven more popular than product videos time and time again.
When a customer walks into your store to shop with you, they get to experience your personality and helpful attitude. Why should the internet be deprived of that? Show up on your TikTok account with authentic content about your daily life as a business owner, behind-the-scenes clips from your team, and with heartfelt messages of gratitude. The power of small business is the people behind it. Big box stores don’t have this!
Luckily, content about yourself should be easy. Just press “Record” and talk authentically about your day, how thankful you are that your store had a busy weekend, or how much fun you and your team had while unboxing the new arrivals. The point is, we want to see YOU!
